Bluegrass & Old Time Music

From Highland reels and mountain ballads to old time waltzes and fiery banjo breakdowns,  Chestnut Grove plays the finest in traditional bluegrass music. This quintet of versatile singers and award winning multi-instrumentalists always delivers a high-energy show that is fun for the entire family!
JOHN ROSSBACH is a powerful and compelling singer, guitarist and mandolin player. His notorious puns and humorous anecdotes highlight the fascinating stories told in America ' s musical art forms. Originally from the mountains of West Virginia , he has received eight Meet the Composer awards and appeared on numerous radio and television programs for the Nashville Network, the Public Broadcasting System, the BBC, CBS, and the Canadian Broadcasting System. Renowned Chicago Tribune critic, Dave Royko, says John' s latest CD, From the Mountains to the Mills, is "Some of the tastiest and tasteful music that's come my way over the past year."
ANDREW VanNORSTRAND's musical psyche must be the reincarnation of some former musical sage. He plays with total conviction and spontaneous wit showing an astonishing command of his instrument and a well-developed intuition for several musical genres. Having recently appeared on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion,"  Andrew has already become a musical legend at the age of nineteen! Andrew's repertoire combines elements of the Irish, French Canadian, Appalachian, Bluegrass, Swing, Scandinavian, Jazz and Gypsy fiddle traditions with his own stunning original compositions.
TED LAMBERT is an outstanding banjo player, fiddler, mandolinist and harmony singer. A mainstay of the Buffalo bluegrass scene, Ted' s talents were the backbone of Western New York' s premier bluegrass act, Creek Bend, for over 20 years. Ted has recorded several projects for the Virginia based Copper Creek label and is in high demand as a regional studio session player. He currently promotes an acclaimed instrument trade show called the Musician's Flea Market and has presented national touring acts through his Buffalo Bluegrass Concert Series since 1984.
PERRY CLEAVELAND's gentlemanly demeanor contrasts well with his fiery mandolin playing. Born in Louisville , Kentucky , Perry was raised in a Syracuse , New York household that hosted many bluegrass luminaries during his formative years. An expert harmony singer, Perry and John toured together in Bristol Mountain Bluegrass before co-founding Chestnut Grove in 1986. He also plays mandolin on the Van Norstrand Brothers' new CD Driftage.
MARY BURDETTE's impeccable timing and good taste lay the foundation for CHESTNUT GROVE'S distinctive sound. With a range of experiences as diverse as performing for the European World of Bluegrass in the Netherlands and the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Nevada, to being the only white singer in an all Black gospel choir, Mary brings with her a unique appreciation for the roots of bluegrass music. She's recorded on Rounder Records with Skip Gorman and toured nationally with such figures as Ruthie Dornfield and Tom Sauber. Her vibrant but gentle sense of humor adds sparkle to any CHESTNUT GROVE performance.
